Third, walking ethnography restricted to a bounded area, mode of mobility (walking), theme (memorials), and epistemology (encounter with objects) generates rich ethnographic material on place, even without expert knowledge of the past. These experiments in walking and encountering objects in the vernacular memoryscape animated our imagination even with only limited detail on what to remember and how to feel about it. In this article, we explore ways to further this concept. The article draws on ethnographic fieldwork in a village in the mid-western region of New South Wales (NSW), Australia, which is surrounded by three large open-cut coal mines. Over the past decade, the mines, in particular the Peabody-owned Wilpinjong mine closest to the village, have had a significant impact on biophysical, social and temporal landscapes in the area. We argue that whilst solastalgia may help explore the relationship between the environmental and human distress triggered in these circumstances, the sense of displacement and loss that emerge are entangled with questions of power and dispossession beyond the biophysical realm. Underpinned by a phenomenological framework of analysis, we contend that place-based distress should be understood as an ontological trauma, as the fabrics of place, belonging and the social relations embedded within disrupt the ongoing sense of being associated with home. These include the means to not only link to the past, but also to imagine the future.]]> Thu 18 Aug 2022 11:03:33 AEST ]]> Postdisaster social work: reflections on the nature of place and loss https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:40228 Thu 14 Jul 2022 09:34:10 AEST ]]> Value, identity and place: unearthing the emotional geographies of the extractive sector https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:34096 Thu 07 Feb 2019 12:40:58 AEDT ]]> Doing place and time differently in practice https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:8485 Sat 24 Mar 2018 08:41:59 AEDT ]]> Making sense of place: exploring concepts and expressions of place through different senses and lenses (book review) https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:8349 Sat 24 Mar 2018 08:39:51 AEDT ]]> Nobbys, Newcastle: place, history, heritage, identity and performance https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:2225 Sat 24 Mar 2018 08:29:02 AEDT ]]> Not going quietly: The Royal on the Move Procession: place, history, memory and community-based performance https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:9942 Sat 24 Mar 2018 08:14:20 AEDT ]]> A classroom without walls: reviewing post-war national imaginings of Australian geography in two Australian documentaries https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:12211 Sat 24 Mar 2018 08:08:24 AEDT ]]> Grit salute https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:16672 Sat 24 Mar 2018 07:59:41 AEDT ]]> Professional learning places and spaces: the staffroom as a site of beginning teacher induction and transition https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:16318 Sat 24 Mar 2018 07:53:23 AEDT ]]> Valuing ordered and organic collaboration: people, place, process and purpose https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:29119 Sat 24 Mar 2018 07:36:54 AEDT ]]> The making of identity and its relation to place and success: the case of 'mainstream' popular music in Newcastle NSW, 1973-1988 https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:26436 Sat 24 Mar 2018 07:27:29 AEDT ]]> The design collective: an emergent model of collaboration https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:22325 Sat 24 Mar 2018 07:15:40 AEDT ]]> Space and place in studies of childhood and youth https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:21905 Sat 24 Mar 2018 07:12:48 AEDT ]]> Affective topologies of rural youth embodiment https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:23852 Sat 24 Mar 2018 07:12:11 AEDT ]]> Co-becoming Bawaka: towards a relational understanding of place/space https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:23951 ganguri (yams) at and with Bawaka, an Indigenous Homeland in northern Australia, and, in doing so, consider an Indigenous-led understanding of relational space/place.
